microwave cleaning and cleaning of many other types of surfaces and appliances, you may find my book Get Your House Clean Now: The Home Cleaning Method Anyone Can Master a useful resource.
For general cleaning, fill a sink with hot, soapy dish water. Use ONLY a microfiber cloth or a NON-SCRATCH scrubbing sponge. The dish soap to use should be a de-greasing dish soap, such as Dawn.
For best results, use a homemade cleaner made of 1/4 lemon juice, 1/4 cup white vinegar, and 2 tablespoons of Dawn dish washing liquid in a spray bottle.
Remove the tray and any racks or turntables and soak them in your hot soapy sink water.
Spray the inside of the microwave liberally with the homemade cleaner mentioned above. Close the microwave door and set it for 30 seconds.
When it is finished, open the door and use a microfiber cloth or scratch free sponge to wipe it out beginning with the top, then the back, the sides, and finally the bottom. Be sure to use the edge of your cloth or sponge to clean food out of the edges where the sides, back, and top meet so food does not continue to cook into those areas and make odors occur.
You may need to repeat this process for really messy microwaves with a lot of stuck on food. Rinse your cloth or sponge and begin again.
NEVER use an abrasive in a microwave. This includes sponges/cloths/scrubbers, as well as cleaning products. If you have a very tough stain, you may find success with a bleach spray cleaner such as Clorox Cleanup in a white interior microwave, or with Bar Keeper's Friend, which is a non-scratch powder cleaner, that may be used for white or stainless steel interiors.
Wipe the inside dry with a towel, finish washing the tray and other accessories, and dry and replace them. Close the door, wipe the outside with a rinsed cloth or sponge. If it is a stainless steel exterior, you will make it shine by using Liquid Gold on a dry microfiber cloth. It is intended for shining stainless steel and will prohibit fingerprints as time goes on.
